We’re currently reading “Dark World” by Zak Bagans and he describes a ghostly encounter in the first part of the book. What he describes sounds like an old hag or something very similar.
Let’s analyze his description of the events and decide if it’s an old hag or something more dastardly.
We’re going to paraphrase Zak’s story. By the way, “Dark World” is a really good book – go pick it up.
In a nutshell, Zak had the following experience:
For a week, he heard his name screamed by a female voice.
On the last night, the entity:
- screamed his name
- pressed down on him so he couldn’t move
- stared deeply into his eyes
- gave him an energy surge
- (speculatively) provided psychic information to seek more answers about the unknown
From what we know about old hags, there are some data points that make us believe it was a hag (calling his name – immobilizing him). There are also data points that make us think it’s more than just a ghost (making a visible presence – giving an energy surge – providing psychic information). It doesn’t sound like a demon or poltergeist at all.
It sounds more like a banshee than an old hag, based on the information in the book. Banshees do call your name and they are messengers of the Otherworld. Banshees have been described as ugly, and they can do many of the same things as an old hag can – like immobilizing you by pressing on your chest. While they call your name with a mourning cry, they don’t have to signal your death. They can be alerting you to something – a message – just like Zak.
Above: Green Lady
The other possibility sounds like a Green Lady of Scots folklore. Green Ladies are neither ghosts or demons. They seem to be faeries, who protect a specific house. They have many similar abilities to an old hag and banshee.
Lastly, it could be an undocumented, otherworldly entity sent to get Zak moving on his true purpose in life; documenting the unknown.
