Fetters | How Ghosts Possess People

Fetters | How Ghosts Possess People

Be careful with that antique jewelry you buy at estate sales or inherit: It could have a malevolent spirit attached. And it wants to take over your body. Get more after the jump.

How Objects Become Fetters

It’s the same process as other haunted objects and anchors. Usually, a strong emotional bond forms with an object like a ring or dress. The owner’s essence, or life force, imbues the object and charges it. When that person dies, it becomes a link from death to the living world.

That’s where the similarity ends.

Fetters have more than your usual essence imbuing hook. With fetters, the object holds the person’s spirit in it.

And with time, the person’s spirit could get twisted into something malevolent. It could become jealous of the living person who buys or inherits the object, and it wants its life back.

Common Objects Known To Be Fetters

The most common fetters include:

  • Wedding rings
  • Broaches
  • Necklaces
  • Earrings
  • Dresses
  • Bracelets
  • Cuff links
  • Money clips
  • Toys

The Differences Between A Fetter, Haunted Object & Ghostly Anchor

Before we get to the differences, please read these articles on haunted objects and ghostly anchors.

Fetters can seem like other possessed possessions and objects, but there is one critical difference: The ghost inhabits the fetter.

With haunted objects and anchors, the spirit of the deceased doesn’t ‘live’ within it. They’re lures that pull someone’s essence back, or they pull some kind of dark entity to our world.

Another key difference deals with possession. A living person, that wears a fetter long enough, will lose themselves to the spirit. Then, the ghost takes up shop in that person’s body. Essentially, the ghost gets reborn in the victim’s body.

Haunted objects and ghostly anchors don’t let that body switcheroo happen.

How To Tell If Someone Is Possessed

Possession isn’t a sudden change. It can take months or years before the living person gives in to the spirit. The spirit’s attack is usually mental or psychic, so people may not even notice what’s happening to their loved one.

As a gradual process, most people around the victim won’t notice the changes. The person under attack may start to use language from the time period of the deceased. They could start to wear vintage clothing, speaking with an accent, and show some quirks from the spirit.

For one thing, the victim becomes obsessed with the object. They must have it with them all the time. This is especially true of jewelry.

The victim may start having night terrors, which is a clue the spirit attacks during sleep. Evil spirits like the dream state because your mind is more open to the supernatural.

The victim’s body will start to weaken as the attack persists. They may get sick more often or they start to waste away. Once they give in to the spirit, their conscience is packed away into a deeper part of their mind.

How To Break The Bond With A Fetter

Once a victim becomes possessed, only an exorcism can remove the ghost from the host. It will harm the person and only a professional should take this task on. Now, this isn’t a demon, so a Catholic priest wouldn’t be that effective. You’d need an Occultist or someone using magick to do the trick.

In many cases, you can destroy the fetter. If you go that route, you want melt it down or smash it into bits. The spirit inside it may try to jump to a new host, but that fails more often than not. The ghost bound itself to the object.

A simpler approach is to use onyx or obsidian. These stones are very effective at breaking ghostly bonds. If you think someone may have a fetter, ask them to wear a nice bracelet or trinket with onyx or obsidian. If they feel uncomfortable, then the stone may be wiggling that ghost loose.

What an interesting post. I didn’t know the difference between a fetter and a haunted object. A fetter sounds dangerous.
